FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT
DURATION: 10-12 HRS

At Beelieve Paediatric Therapy, our Functional Assessments, sometimes referred by the NDIS as a Functional Needs Assessment or Functional Capacity Assessment, are a valuable resource designed to provide comprehensive insights into your child's capabilities. The Functional Assessment is instrumental for assessing your child's needs, adapting to changing circumstances, and seeking additional funding through NDIS. It is also a critical step when consulting a pediatrician for a formal diagnosis.

Please note that the actual assessment process takes approximately 2 hours, with an additional 10 hours dedicated to meticulous reporting and analysis.

Our commitment to gathering and evaluating as much information about your child as possible is what sets our service apart. Given the thorough nature of a Functional Assessment, it typically involves an extensive series of questions and discussions.

To ensure the process is as comfortable and convenient as possible for both you and your child, we occasionally divide it into two separate sessions. If the assessment's comprehensive nature seems overwhelming, we are happy to work with you over the phone or via telehealth for information collection, allowing you to avoid discussing your child's difficulties in their presence. Please feel free to let us know if this option suits your preferences.

Throughout the process, we will conduct in-person assessments and observations with your child. Additionally, we will provide you with specific assessments to complete. This multifaceted approach ensures that we obtain a wealth of information to inform our final report.

Our Functional Assessments delve into your child's capabilities and how they engage in day-to-day activities and within their community. We understand the unique needs of each child and tailor our assessments accordingly, ensuring a personalized approach to better address their specific requirements.

Trust us to provide valuable insights and expert guidance to help your child reach their full potential.

Functional Assessment

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a process that helps determine how well your child can perform everyday activities, such as playing, learning, and interacting with others. It looks at their strengths and challenges to provide a clear picture of their abilities. This assessment is especially important for families who are part of the NDIS or considering joining, as it helps identify the type of support and resources your child may need to thrive.

By understanding your child’s functional capacity, you can better advocate for the necessary funding and services to support their development and overall well-being. This assessment not only guides you in navigating the NDIS but also ensures that your child receives the tailored assistance they require to reach their full potential.

WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT?

Parent Discussion:

We will arrange a discussion lasting about 1.5 hours with a parent or guardian who knows the child best. This conversation is crucial for gathering valuable insights and understanding your child's unique needs. If the  assessment seems overwhelming, we can divide this discussion into two separate sessions. We’re also happy to work with you over the phone or via telehealth for information collection, allowing you to avoid discussing your child's difficulties in their presence.

Child Assessment:

The actual assessment time varies depending on your child's age and abilities, typically ranging from 45 to 90 minutes. During this session, we focus on building rapport with your child, observing their skills, and completing any necessary standardised assessments.

Report & Feedback:

After the assessment, our Occupational Therapist will spend approximately 6 to 9 hours scoring and interpreting all the information gathered. We will then prepare a comprehensive report detailing your child’s strengths and areas for support. Finally, we’ll arrange a time to share the assessment findings with you, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the outcomes.

Preparation:

Once we schedule your Functional Assessment, we’ll send you a variety of questionnaires to complete at your convenience—whether online, over the phone, or in person. We’ll also collect any existing reports from speech therapists, physiotherapists, or cognitive assessments to reference your child’s support team throughout the report.

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a crucial step for parents whose children are on the NDIS or seeking to access it. This assessment helps you understand and communicate how your child's abilities impact their daily activities, including play, learning, and everyday routines. It is especially useful when applying for funding, during an NDIS review, or when applying for a change in circumstances. By offering valuable insights into your child's strengths and challenges, the assessment provides a comprehensive outline that supports your child's development and well-being within the NDIS framework.
