The Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA) is an evidence-based assessment specifically tailored to children facing the challenges of hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy or brachial plexus injuries. Essential to begin your hand therapy journey, our assessment provides clear outcomes and summarised findings for your therapist to utilise and target your support to ensure the best quality outcomes.

This specialised evaluation is designed to observe your child's use of both hands during interactive and engaging activities through a gold standard assessment. By doing so, we can accurately identify the current level of function in the assisting hand and pinpoint areas that require targeted intervention to enhance hand use.

Based on the Gold Coast, our Assisting Hand Assessments are personalised and recommended by our experienced Occupational Therapists who have a deep understanding of paediatric care. We are committed to helping your child achieve their fullest potential and improve their quality of life.

Observation and Assessment: The assessment process typically takes approximately 30 minutes, during which our skilled therapists will closely observe your child's hand movements and interactions. This does need to be video recorded for the integrity of the assessment.

Detailed Analysis: Following the assessment, we invest 1.5 hours in scoring and meticulously interpreting the results. This allows us to create a customised plan tailored to your child's unique needs and goals.

Comprehensive Report: You will receive an informative report summarising the assessment findings, the goals we've established for your child, and the recommended intervention strategies. We provide clear findings to support your journey with hand therapy.

Family-Centred Approach: We believe in the power of collaboration and open communication.  Our team will provide feedback and guidance to both your family and your child's therapist to ensure a seamless transition into the intervention phase.

Supporting Your Child's Journey: At Beelieve Paediatric Therapy, we go the extra mile to support your child's therapy journey. We can then provide your ongoing therapy to support your child’s progress, or alternatively provide the assessment and detailed reports to other therapy practices, ensuring that your child's progress is guided by standardised data and regular reviews. Your journey to hand therapy on the Gold Coast starts here.

WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT?

An Assisting Hands assessment is a specialised evaluation that identifies how well a child uses both hands together, establishing a baseline and tracking progress over time. The AHA assessment is beneficial for children with conditions like cerebral palsy or an acquired brain injury who have a hemiplegia, as it helps pinpoint specific goals for your therapy team to work on in order to support the development of using the assisting hand, which is crucial for daily activities.

At Beelieve Paediatric Therapy, our occupational therapist is certified and trained to administer this gold standard assessment. By observing how your child engages in play and everyday tasks, we can gain valuable insights into their strengths and areas that may need improvement. With this information, we can create tailored strategies that encourage the effective use of both hands, ultimately enhancing your child’s independence and confidence in their daily life.

You might consider an Assisting Hands assessment if you have concerns about how your child uses both hands during daily activities, particularly if they have hemiplegic cerebral palsy or an acquired brain injury. The AHA assessment is especially beneficial if you notice your child struggling to engage in tasks like playing with toys, using utensils, or completing self-care activities.

Not only does it help identify specific challenges and set meaningful goals for their therapy journey, but it can also re-assess progress and reset goals both before and after intervention. If you're looking to better understand your child’s strengths and areas for improvement in using their hands together, this assessment can provide valuable insights. It helps you and your therapy team create a focused plan to support your child's development and enhance their independence in everyday life.
