ADOS ASSESSMENT
ASSESSMENT: 10-12 HOURS
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is an evidence based, gold standard assessment for children which aims to identify children who demonstrate high levels of autism traits. This assessment is completed through the observation of social skills through play, gathering information from parents and guardians and the completion of other standardised assessments to gather a comprehensive picture of the child. It assesses a child's communication, play, engagement with others and repetitive and restrictive behaviours.
Our team at Beelieve Paediatric Therapy have completed the training to provide this assessment on the Gold Coast.
Please note your OT can provide a report with the findings, however if you are seeking a diagnosis this report needs to be taken to a Paediatrician. Beelieve OTs are unable to provide a formalised diagnosis.
The assessment takes approx. 30-60 minutes. The remaining hours are used for parent/guardian interview, scoring, interpretation of the results and report writing.

We accept:
WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT?
Parent Discussion:
We’ll schedule a discussion lasting about 1.5 hours with a parent or guardian who knows the child best. This conversation is crucial for gathering detailed information about your child's social interactions and communication skills.
Assessment:
The assessment itself takes place in a clinic-style environment, typically at a community centre, as it cannot be done at home. This part lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes, and it's important for parents to be present during this time as you may be needed to carry out one of the tasks.
Scoring & Reporting:
After the assessment, our Occupational Therapist dedicates about 6 to 7 hours to carefully score and interpret all results from both the ADOS and the other standardised assessments. This culminates in a comprehensive report that provides valuable insights into your child's needs and development.
Preparation:
Once we book your assessment, we’ll send you a series of questionnaires to complete at your convenience—whether online, over the phone, or in person. This helps us gather initial information about your child’s behaviors and development.
An ADOS assessment may be necessary if you're noticing signs that your child is having difficulty with social interactions, communication, or play. If you’re considering an autism diagnosis or wondering if your child may be on the autism spectrum, the ADOS can provide valuable insights. It’s especially helpful if you have concerns about your child's ability to engage with others, understand social cues, or express their thoughts and feelings. This assessment is designed to observe how your child interacts in various situations, helping to clarify any challenges they may be facing. If you think your child could benefit from this evaluation, our Occupational Therapist can guide you through the process and help determine if an ADOS assessment is right for your child.
When do I need an ADOS Assessment?
What to expect during ADOS assessments?
The ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) assessment is a structured evaluation designed to assess a child's social and communication skills. During the assessment, our Occupational Therapist observes how your child interacts, plays, and communicates in a friendly and relaxed environment. This helps us understand their behaviours and challenges, especially for those who may have difficulties in social situations. Our Occupational Therapist is certified and trained to administer the ADOS assessment, which is used in partnership with other standardised assessments to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your child's needs.
Please note that while your Occupational Therapist can provide a report detailing the findings from the assessment, if you are seeking a formal diagnosis, this report will need to be taken to a paediatrician or clinical psychologist. Our Occupational Therapist is unable to provide a formalised diagnosis. This thorough approach ensures your child receives a complete and compassionate assessment, helping to develop effective strategies that support their overall development.
